Find out what steps you need to take to repeat a course.
Once your grades post, you should double-check your registration to make sure you're meeting pre- and co-requisites for your upcoming courses.

Hopefully your intended schedule looks great and you don't need to make any changes. However, if you earn any grade lower than a C-, adjustments might need to be made.

All CSE majors have some courses that must be taken sequentially (e.g. PHYS 1301W before PHYS 1302W). You must earn a C- or better for a course to count toward your major requirements, and to move on to the next course in the sequence.

Consult your Four-Year Plan to review all of your pre- and co-requisites. If you need to repeat a course, it is your responsibility to make the necessary adjustments to your schedule - the registration system will not do it for you. Remember that pre- and co-requisites are listed under the course prefix and number on the Four-Year Plan.

If you wish to repeat a course at another institution, you will need to verify it is equivalent to what is offered at the University of Minnesota. Transferology is an excellent resource to determine course equivalencies. Additionally, it is important to keep in mind that although getting a passing grade in courses you transfer in from an institution outside the University of Minnesota will get you credit for a course, they will not be calculated into your cumulative or technical GPAs at the U of M.

Finally, be aware that there are limitations to the amount of times you can repeat courses, as well as GPA considerations. It is a good idea to connect with your academic advisor about your situation if you have questions. Advisors can discuss how repeating coursework will impact your overall plan. Feel free to review the policy for repeating courses for more information, or connect with your advisor if you have additional questions.Sarah Hilgerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04000533081366929092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839775760169422686.post-71855017789020235312024-01-01T14:32:00.000-08:002024-01-02T12:01:32.077-08:00I've heard Computer Science is a competitive major, what should I know?
Computer Science is CSE’s fastest growing major. At this
time, there is more demand for the program than the department can currently
accommodate. In this post, we’ll dive into the admission to the major process
and statistics. We’ll also cover the importance of parallel planning.

The Computer Science program has seen a tremendous increase
in interest for more than a decade. While the department has worked to
accommodate the growing demand, the investment in department faculty, staff,
and facilities has been unable to keep pace. Therefore, the department has been
forced to place strict limits on admission to the major until sufficient
capacity has been built to accommodate all interested and qualified students.
The Computer Science Department has put together this webpage
to discuss the recent changes to the major admission criteria.

What else should I be doing as I work toward applying to
the major?

Due the Computer Science Department’s space limitations, we
encourage all students interested in pursuing computer science to keep tabs on
the technical GPA cut-off trends for the major, know which courses count toward
their technical GPA, and create a parallel plan. Parallel planning helps
students more easily pivot majors if needed/desired while limiting stress.

When am I eligible to apply to the Computer Science
program?

Current CSE students are eligible to apply to the Computer
Science major when the have the following courses (or their equivalents) either
completed or in progress: MATH 1371, MATH 1372, CSCI 1133, CSCI 1933, and CSCI
2011. All prerequisite courses must be completed by the end of the term in
which a student is applying for admission to the major with a grade of C- or
higher.

CSE accepts applications to the major during the fall and
spring semesters. Further information on applying to a major, including the
admission to the major timeline, may be found on Application
to a Major Information for Current CSE Students page.

What does the Computer Science Department take into
consideration when reviewing applications to the major?

A student’s technical GPA is the primary criteria used for
determining admission to a major in CSE.

Historical
Technical GPA Cut-offs by Major

Courses
Used in Technical GPA Calculation

To enable a more holistic review of applicants to the major,
students may also submit a Self-Advocacy Statement.
Please note, the self-advocacy statement is specific to the Computer Science
major. A self-advocacy statement is the only way a student may be admitted to
the Computer Science major with a technical GPA below the cut-off.

I’ve heard a 3.2 technical GPA guarantees me admission to
the major, is this true?

Students who have completed all of the necessary
prerequisite courses and have a 3.2 technical GPA or above by the end of the
fall semester will be guaranteed admission to the major. Students who apply to
the major during the spring semester are considered for the major on a
space-available basis. During the spring semester, there is no guaranteed
technical GPA for admission to the major.

What happens if I am not admitted to the Computer Science
program?

Students are eligible to apply to the Computer Science
program twice. If you have not been admitted to a major after three semesters
of enrollment, or after one semester of enrollment if you are a transfer
student, a Major Declaration Required (MDR) hold will be put on your account. The
MDR hold will only be removed once a student has been admitted to a major in
CSE or if they transfer to another college at the University of Minnesota.

Students who have an MDR hold must meet with their college
advisor to discuss their plans moving forward. Advisors will assist students
with determining the feasibility of being admitted to the Computer Science
major and will support students in parallel planning. Students who cannot
mathematically get their technical GPA up to the recent technical GPA cut-off
range will be encouraged to pivot to their parallel plan. If a student has not
been admitted to the Computer Science program after two attempts, they will be
required to switch to their parallel plan.

You keep mentioning parallel planning, what exactly does
it mean?

Simply put, a parallel plan is a back-up plan. CSE
encourages all pre-major students to identify and create a parallel plan as a
back-up plan to their first-choice major, regardless of their first-choice
major. Parallel planning can help students pivot majors more easily while limiting
stress. Check out our blog
post on parallel planning for more information on how to create your
parallel plan.

What are common parallel plans for computer science
pre-majors?

There are often multiple paths to the same career field.

(i.e. course access and permission numbers)
You've built your schedule and you're ready to go! You click to submit your registration, and you get the dreaded error message that a section you want is full. Don't panic! Sometimes it happens, and we have some tips to help you manage it.

You may be considering making changes to your current schedule, but find that a section is full. We thought it would be helpful to provide you with some information on how to request access to closed courses.

All academic departments handle access to courses differently. For instance, introductory Physics courses open in increments throughout the registration period to ensure balanced sections. Openings usually appear due to student cancellations, additional seats added, or reserved seats returned to general registration, so you should check the website frequently.

On the other hand, all available seats in introductory Chemistry courses are immediately open at the start of the registration period. Like Physics, you should continue to check the website if you can't get into a specific section and adjust your enrollment if a seat becomes available. Permission numbers are not provided.

Several departments have established specific guidelines for requesting access to their courses. Because it is at the academic department's discretion as to whether or not they grant you access to a closed course, it's important to know their preferred method for requesting permission.

Below are the policies and procedures for each department. Departments with specific information about course access on their websites are hyperlinked. Please note getting a permission number/access isn't guaranteed, but please follow instructions/links below to submit your request:

• Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics
• Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering: Contact the instructor of the course you are interested in
• Biomedical Engineering
• Chemical Engineering and Materials Science
• Chemistry: No access is granted to closed courses. If you are an honors student, you will also be assigned an honors advisor. In this blog post, we'll break down how to find your advisor(s)'s information, and common areas each advisor can support you with.

What is the role of a college academic advisor?

All students are assigned a college academic advisor during
their undergraduate experience. If you have been admitted to the University
Honors Program (UHP), you will be assigned a UHP academic advisor in addition
to your college advisor during your first semester.

Your college academic advisor is a professional staff member who serves as your
primary point-of-contact for academic planning and questions. College academic
advisors provide resources for academic success, personal wellbeing, and goal
setting. You can learn more about academic advising on the CSE Academic Advising
webpage. Although your college academic advisor will be available to you
throughout your undergraduate career, they will primarily work with you prior
to admission to your major (we call this “pre-major” advising).

What is the role of a departmental advisor?

Once admitted to your major, you will work more closely with
a professional staff member and/or faculty member within your major
department—known as a departmental or major advisor—for academic planning (we
call this “upper division” advising). You can learn more on the CSE Academic Advising

Your departmental advisor can also often assist with questions related to research, graduate school, and general employment questions.

How does an honors advisor differ from a college or departmental advisor?

While certain areas may overlap between honors (UHP) advisors and college or departmental advisors, such as preparing for registration and connecting with campus resources, an honors advisor works with honors students to ensure they are meeting the honors requirements and can help identify synergies between UHP and collegiate degree requirements.

How do I schedule an academic advising appointment?

If you have not yet been admitted to your major, you are
encouraged to use the online scheduling tool first to schedule an appointment
with your college academic advisor for appointments related to registration, major declaration required holds, or probation. If you cannot find an appointment that works with your schedule or if you are wanting to schedule a meeting that is not related to a hold, you may also email your advisor or contact the front desk of the
CSE Academic Advising and Career Services (612-624-2890), located in Lind Hall, Room 105, to
schedule an appointment. More information can be found about appointment
scheduling on the CSE
Academic Advising webpage.

Honors students should check their honor's academic advisor's availability, or
call 612-624-5522 to schedule an appointment to discuss questions or concerns
related to honors requirements

If you have been admitted to your major, you may visit, email, or call the
academic department’s main office to determine how to schedule an appointment.
That location and contact information can be found on the bottom of the major’s
Four-Year Plan, or on the department’s website.
Registration is coming up quickly! Putting together your schedule doesn't have to be a chore. Use these tips, and you'll feel confident as you get ready to plan your courses.

Check your registration queue time and hold type: Once these dates and times are assigned, you can find this information by logging into MyU and selecting the Academics tab. Click on the Registration link on the top of the landing page. This will take you to your assigned time for registration. You can also find a general registration timeline on One Stop.

Review the Four-Year Plan for your major

Review your APAS to make sure your record is correct, and to find what remaining lib eds you have: You should check your APAS 1-2 times per semester, typically before getting ready to register for the next semester, and after completing your registration to make sure everything looks accurate. You should be using both your Four-Year Plan and APAS to inform your course selection decisions. Contact your advisor if you have further questions, or something looks out of place on your APAS.

Review registration and grading policies: Be aware of the grade base option you select during registration. All of your major and minor requirements need to be taken A-F. You can find more information about making changes to your registration and grading policies on One Stop's website.

Planning schedules: Many students report using Schedule Builder to develop their schedules. This is a great resource, and can be helpful in navigating the numerous classes and section meeting times at the U. You may also find searching and registering for individual classes easier via MyU. How-To Guides for different processes (i.e. search for a class, register, drop a course) can be found here.

Registration may take some patience and flexibility: Depending on your queue time and course availability, you might not get the schedule or courses you had hoped for initially. While there may not be a spot in a particular section now, keep an eye on sections that you want. Registration changes are frequent during this time and over the summer, and you could get into your desired course with a little patience and perseverance. Ultimately, it is important to get a spot in a course you need so you are not off sequence with your major, so some flexibility on your part will go a long way in helping you get to graduation in a timely manner.

Keep withdrawal and change deadlines in mind: Hopefully, the tentative schedule you put together now is the perfect one for you! There is always the possibility that something may change, however, once classes start. It is very important to be aware of important deadlines, such as grading basis change, withdrawal, and add deadlines. You can find all of those by visiting this link. Put them in your calendar today!

Summer 2024 courses: Summer 2024 registration at the UMN opens on February 22. If you are planning to take a summer class, whether at the UMN or elsewhere, it is recommended that you check with your advisor for feedback. You can do so via email, drop-in advising, or by scheduling an appointment.

If you have additional questions or concerns, feel free to contact CSE Academic Advising. Your advisor is just an email away. The College of Science and Engineering is thrilled to welcome the class of 2027 and new-to-the-U transfer students to campus. We recognize that there is going to be a lot of information to absorb during Welcome Week, so we want to give you a few tips ahead of time to help you feel ready.

Welcome Week is an exciting, energizing experience. You can feel the buzz in the air as everyone arrives on campus campus to gear-up for their first year at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Here are a few helpful hints to ensure you have an amazing experience.

Review your Welcome Week information: Make sure you are planning your schedule to be on campus and available for the entirety of the Welcome Week experience. You can find more information on the Orientation and Transition Experiences website here:
- First-year students: https://ote.umn.edu/incoming-freshman/welcome-freshman
- Transfer students: https://ote.umn.edu/incoming-transfer/welcome-transfer

Be open to meeting new people: You will be joining more than 1,700 new-to-CSE students, which equates to more than 1,700 opportunities to make new friends! There will also be thousands of new-to-the-U students around campus from other colleges, as well. Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and chat with others - this includes staff and faculty. You never know where it will lead--you might just develop a friendship or connection that could last a lifetime!

Take ownership of your experience: Many of the activities will be structured for you, but you still want to be mindful of how you manage your time. Use the resources available to you (staff members, peers, etc.) to navigate campus as smoothly as possible. This is a skill you will need to use as a student, so this is a great opportunity to start practicing now.

Be observant: You likely won’t be able to remember all of the resources mentioned, but try to take note of as many things as you comfortably can. This includes student groups, events, academic resources, building locations, and even places you might want to study or decompress. We've got the answers!
The start of the fall semester is just a couple months away! As you are planning your next year or your transition to the U, questions about computer/technology requirements for school are common. Thankfully, there are a number of resources on campus to point you in a good direction.

It is helpful to know that you can successfully complete CSE coursework using either a Mac or PC. If you have more experience with one type than the other, stick with what you are most comfortable using. The College also has a significant number computer labs for student use.

If you are purchasing a new computer for school, consider looking at the technology website through the University Bookstore. They offer information and some great discounts on your technology needs. Additionally, the Office of Information Technology has excellent resources specifically for students.

It is also helpful to ask other students their input on what type of computer they find the most helpful. If you are going to be a new-to-the-U student this fall, Orientation Leaders and Peer Leaders can also be helpful resources for this.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-839775760169422686.post-54395691466410500022023-05-24T09:02:00.003-07:002023-05-25T07:05:27.261-07:00Considering Taking Time Away from the University? If your instructor teaches several courses, indicate which course you are taking. Then, begin the conversation. This blog post will discuss the grading basis options and their implications.

You may take a course under A-F or S/N (i.e. "pass/fail") grading bases; however, it is important to understand your choice and its potential implications. In many cases, you can choose your grade basis when you register, but some courses limit the options available. Some courses may also have an audit option; however, this option is not recommended for degree seeking students as auditing a course does not result in credit being earned.

The University policy states that you cannot take courses required by your major or minor with an S/N grading basis unless a particular course required by your major or minor is only offered with an S/N grading basis.* Therefore, it is very important that you select A-F grading when you register for any major or minor required courses.

If you opt to take a non-major/minor course as S/N, note that you will need to earn an "S" to receive credit for a course. An "N" will result in no credit earned. Neither an "S" nor an "N" grade have an impact on one's GPA.

You have through the second week of the semester to change your grading basis for a class. Your petition will need to include a personal statement detailing why you missed the deadline to change your grading basis, a timeline of events, and evidence of extenuating circumstances.

Petitions to request a change in grading basis from A-F to S/N after the deadline are very rarely approved. Please contact your college advisor if you have any questions about the petition process.

*During fall 2020, spring 2021, and summer 2021 temporary policy exceptions were made to the S/N grading basis policy in response to COVID-19. it is helpful to identify a back-up plan or a “parallel plan” should you change
your mind or if you are not able to get into your first-choice major.

Simply put, a parallel plan is a back-up plan. CSE encourages all pre-major students to identify and create
a parallel plan to their first-choice major, regardless of if they will be
applying to a historically space limited major or not. Parallel planning helps students
more easily pivot majors while limiting stress. All sophomore year pre-major students
will create a parallel plan during their required fall registration workshop;
however, it’s never too early to start brainstorming!

When developing a parallel plan:

Reflect on what other majors sound interesting to you and consider
what fields you feel you will be successful in. Your advisor and CSE
Career Counselors are available to support you as you identify your options
and interests. The Center for Academic Planning
and Exploration (CAPE) can also help support you in exploring majors across
the University. Remember, there are often multiple paths within CSE to the same
career field. Check out the What can I do with a major in…? page to see detailed information about career outcomes by major.

Compare the Four-Year Plans for your
current major and your parallel plan to identify which courses you have already
fulfilled on your parallel plan. Many CSE majors share coursework within the
first 2-3 semesters; therefore, you may be able to switch majors without adding
more time to graduation, although this is not guaranteed.

Make note of what courses you still need to complete for the
parallel plan, including courses required for admission to the major. If you
have not yet taken them, when are they available? When would you be eligible to
apply to your parallel plan?

Lastly, should you decide to switch to your parallel plan,
or if you need help in developing your parallel plan, please connect with your
academic advisor. They are here to support you throughout your time in CSE!

Welcome to the University of Minnesota, and the College of Science and Engineering! We are excited you have chosen to join us this upcoming semester, and know that as you prepare to start your first year with us, it is likely you have a number of questions, especially regarding your major and how long it will take you to graduate. Here, we have addressed common questions incoming first-year and transfer students contact us with. We hope they are helpful in your transition to CSE!
a pre-major student to an upper division student?

When you come to the U as a
first-year student or a transfer student who has some introductory courses not
yet complete, you are considered pre-major. This means you are planning to
pursue a certain major (i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth Sciences,
etc.), but have not yet completed the coursework required to be admitted
officially to the major and department. CSE has a secondary admission-to-the
major process that students go through while they are typically in the
sophomore fall coursework on the <span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Four-Year Plan
for their major. Upon successful acceptance to the major, you will then be
considered an upper division student, no longer pre-major. Students will talk
with their advisor about this process closer to the time for their application.

major?

If you are considering changing
your major, it is important to speak with your advisor. They can discuss how
that may impact your graduation timeline, if it will, as well as course

Depending on where you are in
your college journey, it can be relatively easy to change majors, or a little
more of a challenge because it may add time to your graduation goals. If you

If you have taken (or plan on taking) AP or IB exams to earn credit toward degree requirements, there are some important things to keep in mind. Your CSE Academic Advising team has all the information you need to know.
If you have taken (or plan on taking) Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams to earn credit towards degree requirements, we have some important things for you to keep in mind prior to orientation.

All CSE majors are designed to be four-year programs and experiences: While coming in with AP or IB courses can be beneficial for satisfying academic requirements, students should still anticipate a four-year experience. This is due to many factors, including course sequencing within majors, and course offerings. While coming in with additional credit will not necessarily shorten your time to degree completion, it can make adding a minor, taking additional courses in subjects that interest you, doing research, or other opportunities more feasible. Be sure to discuss your options with your academic advisor.

Many students do not have their AP or IB scores by their orientation date: It is okay to come to come to orientation without them! When you meet with an advisor, you will discuss how you think you did, and use your best judgment to register for classes. Please be honest with your advisor, as that will help us recommend the best option for you. Once you receive your scores, you can adjust your schedule, if needed. It is strongly recommended that you contact your advisor about changes you plan to make, as they may have helpful insight as to your best course of action.
You may retake a course that you already earned AP or IB credit for: Choosing to utilize AP or IB scores to satisfy degree requirements is your personal choice. If you feel unsure about moving into more advanced coursework, it may make more sense to retake the course – it does not hurt to revisit the material to have a solid understanding of concepts. This is especially true for Math, Chemistry, and Physics, as they are the foundation for CSE majors. It is important to know that you cannot earn duplicate credit if you choose to retake a course, and you may not retroactively use your AP or IB credit to satisfy a course requirement if you do not pass the course if you choose to take it at the U. An advisor will work with you during orientation to discuss your options.
You will meet with your advisor to review your AP and IB scores (actual or anticipated) prior to registering: We understand that trying to choose courses might initially feel daunting. That is why you have a 30-minute one-on-one meeting with your academic advisor at orientation. We will review all of your AP and IB scores with you in order to help you make appropriate registration choices.
We encourage you to take a look at the following web pages to see how AP and IB exam scores translate to credit at the University of Minnesota. Please note that although you may receive credit for a score, it may be best to retake the course to make sure you have a strong skill set in that area (primarily technical courses). Of course, your advisor will be happy to explain and discuss this more in-depth during your orientation appointment, and help you select the best options for you.
