Future Gophers: Orientation tips and reminders

Welcome, CSE Class of 2024 and transfer students! Orientation is an exciting part of your transition to college. You'll meet other new students, learn about the University of Minnesota, and select the courses you will take fall semester. The CSE Academic Advising team has provided some tips to help you be prepared for and make the most of your orientation experience.
Orientation is an exciting part of your transition to college. During orientation, you'll have the opportunity to meet other new students, learn about the University of Minnesota, and get an idea of what life will be like as a college student at the UMN-Twin Cities. You will also have a one-on-one appointment with a CSE academic advisor to discuss your interests and goals, ways to get involved on campus, and the courses you will take fall semester.

Hopefully, you've had a chance to review the information about orientation for first-year or transfer students from Orientation and Transition Experiences (OTE; formerly Orientation and First-Year Programs) to make sure you're ready to go for your orientation experience. After reviewing that information, you will need to complete your New Student Checklist to register for your orientation date.

In addition to the information from OTE, the CSE Academic Advising team has provided some tips to help you be prepared for and make the most of your orientation experience:

Incoming first-year students: Check your schedule and select an orientation session that you will be available to complete entirely. Both days of orientation are equally important and required, so make sure to check your calendar before scheduling your orientation date so you can attend the entire two-day session.

New-to-the-UMN-Twin Cities incoming transfer students: Your orientation is a one-day experience. Make sure to check your calendar before scheduling your orientation date to make sure you are available for the entire day you have selected, and register early. Dates tend to fill quickly, so register as soon as possible for an orientation session that fits your schedule. We want to make sure you get the date that works best for you.

Come curious. Orientation is the perfect time to ask questions! We will have plenty of resources available to provide you the information you need. Write down a few questions prior to your orientation date to ask Orientation Leaders, CSE Peer Leaders, and your academic advisor.

Be open to possibility. Many new freshmen are nervous because they don't know what they want to major in. That's okay! Orientation is the first step to exploring the various majors offered in the College of Science and Engineering. Throughout your first year, there will opportunities to explore. If you have questions while at orientation, make sure to bring them with you to your advising appointment so your advisor can assist you in starting to explore your options.

Those supporting you need to be prepared, too! If your parents or whoever supports you will be joining you, they should review information about Parent Orientation prior to attending:

Freshmen: https://ote.umn.edu/freshman-parents
Transfer: https://ote.umn.edu/transfer-parents

We hope this is helpful, and we look forward to seeing you this summer!

*Students transferring to CSE from other UMN-Twin Cities colleges: Your orientation is online. Please review your New Student Checklist for more information on how to complete that process.
