As a student, you should make an effort to talk with your professors - whether you need academic help or just want to build connections. However, we know it can be nerve-wracking to reach out. After all, they are experts in their fields, and that might feel intimidating!

It's important not to let nerves get in the way. You might be surprised how easy it can be if you approach your professors prepared and confident.

To help you out, the CSE Academic Advising team has put together a few tips for connecting with your professors.
  • Be prepared. Review your syllabus and know your professor's expectations. Do they prefer you drop by for office hours, or would they rather you call or email first to schedule an appointment?
  • Be concise. Perhaps there is a particular homework problem you are having trouble with, or maybe you are interested in your professor's research. It's important to think carefully about how your professor can help you. Use concise language to get a direct answer (e.g. "I'm having difficulty getting past the second step on Problem #3 of this week's homework. Are you available to meet on Monday during office hours?"). Also, be courteous and professional.
  • Be patient. Professors are busy people! Chances are they have a lot of emails and phone calls to answer. Allow for a reasonable amount of time for a response, especially if you email at night or over the weekend.
  • Be persistent. We've all forgotten to answer an email or return a phone call. It happens, and professors are human! If you haven't received a response, don't assume the professor doesn't want to help you. If you don't hear back in three days, try a new method of communication.

So go ahead and reach out. You'll develop new relationships that can help you with coursework, lead to research opportunities, and make yourself known on campus. The more you practice approaching your professors, the more comfortable and confident you'll feel.
