Academic Advising: Using your one-time-only late withdrawal (OTO)

Using your one-time-only late withdrawal (OTO)

You’ve given it your best shot, but unfortunately, it appears as though you are not going to pass a course. The semester withdrawal deadline has passed. What options do you have?
All U of M students are given the option of a One-Time-Only Late Withdrawal (OTO), which allows you to drop a course once during your academic career, though the semester withdrawal deadline has passed. There are some key things to know about the OTO:

  • The OTO must be used prior to the last day of the semester (Wednesday, December 16) and before you have taken the final exam for the course. This is very important!
  • A "W" will be placed on your record to indicate that you have withdrawn from the course.
  • If you are an international student and using your OTO will drop you below 12 credits, it is mandatory you meet with an advisor in International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to learn more about your options before coming to see us.
  • You must come in during drop-in advising hours to talk with an advisor to get approval for your OTO. After that meeting, you are responsible for taking the approved OTO form to Onestop, which should be done immediately.
