It's not unusual for advisors to hear students proudly declare, "I want to double major in math and computer science! Oh, and can I add a Spanish minor in there, too?"
You surely can, but hold on for a second! Before you pursue additional majors or minors, it's important to explore your motivations and understand what's involved.
Why do I want to add a second major or minor?
This is the most important question to be asking yourself. Is it out of personal interest? Are there professional outcomes attached?
Keep in mind that many opportunities exist outside the classroom that can offer you experience that is equally valuable. For example, maybe you studied a second language for several years in high school. While pursuing a minor is definitely an option, you could also study abroad or join a student group that would allow you to use your skills.
How will adding an additional major or a minor impact my time here?
It's important to be realistic about whether or not you can finish in four years if you choose to add another major or a minor.
There are some programs that are inherently more flexible and allow for it more easily. However, it is possible that it will increase your time at the University of Minnesota.
This is dependent on several factors, including how sequential your chosen major or minor is, as well as if you were admitted to the University with AP/IB/CIS or PSEO credit.
Next steps:
Assuming you've come to the conclusion that you are serious about adding an additional major or a minor to your program, there are steps you will need to take to move forward.
- Let your advisor know your intentions. We can help you dig deeper into your motivations and suggest ways to integrate the additional courses into your current program or alternate ways to reach your goals.
- Connect with the academic department of the additional major or minor. It's essential that you know the individual admissions and declaration requirements prior to committing.
- Continue to evaluate. Goals and motivations change. This is perfectly normal, and you may find that you no longer wish to pursue the additional coursework. Be sure to let your advisor know in order to keep your academic records current.
